Disruptive start-ups and banks – putting the ‘me’ in disintermediate*
Like Caz, I was also at the Finextra Social Media day last week and I was also inspired by the social business panel and, in particular, Giles Andrews from Zopa’s comments on trust. As Caz effectively outlined in her post, Giles distinguished ...

Consultant - Financial Services
Interested in how social media affects big business. I help large corporations to evolve their structural and cultural core to support the shift that the rise of social requires. Fascinated by the future of banking.
Not wishing to give away my true age, I've managed to clock up over 16 years experience helping businesses explore their requirements and develop offline and online solutions, so I really know what works - and just as importantly, what doesn't!
I began my career in the Oil and Gas industry (software product manager for an oil and gas exploration mapping system - feels like a lifetime ago!).
In 2004 I joined NixonMcInnes as a web producer where I helped our clients understand their audiences and what they needed their web sites to do and then worked with our development team to get them built.
I managed to coincide my break for maternity leave in 2007 with the rapid rise of social media and when I returned to NixonMcInnes in 2008 I moved into consultancy role to help our clients navigate this seismic shift in their business.
What I find compelling is that, four years on, the aftershocks are still happening. In fact I believe that big business is only now beginning to understand how fundamental the impact of social will be to their business models.
This is hugely exciting and suggests that we will see major upheaval in the way that corporations operate in the next few years.
Happily, my experience means I am well placed to help them navigate the impact and implications of social technologies for their business.
Within my role, my main area of focus is around the financial services. I'm fascinated with how social technologies are feeding into innovation in these businesses and how these traditionally risk averse structures are beginning to adopt social practices. I am a regular blogger on the finance community Finextra on this topic.
