We’ve been trying to arrange a formal process for taking on interns.
It’s an issue close to my heart since I actually started my career as an intern right here at NM after graduating at University, so I know how important it is for young people to get experience of the work environment.
Since having some initial hold-ups, we’ve now partnered with Dv8 who are helping us recruit an apprentice – so they’ll be studying and trained by Dv8, whilst learning what it’s like to be in a real workplace, with us.
I’ve been really eager to do this for two main reasons:
Part of our mission is to change 21st century business in a positive way. Gen Y is a crucial part of that change and it’s our responsibility as a business to be a steward for these guys.
We hope to give them a chance to experience a workplace which is fun, inspiring, challenging and forward-thinking – because this might help them take this thinking into the future and share these learnings more widely.
When recruiting, we focused on applicant’s personality and values rather than their twitter followers.
Just like Ross said previously, for us the benefit of hosting an intern isn’t farming them out on client tasks, but to learn from them, to be inspired and to expand our understanding of technology and people.
We recognise that it is a mix of flavours – people from all different backgrounds – which will make us smarter, as a collective.
So, what’s next?
Our new apprentice will be joining our team soon! Watch this space…
