Improving Digital Inclusion in Brighton

Tweet from @nixonmcinnes on Twitter

A very timely tweet from Will on our Twitter profile this afternoon. Hot on the heels of the awesome YRS2012 and in the run-up to the equally exciting Meaning and Social by the Sea, we’re helping out with an exciting participatory event run by Brighton’s favourite social innovators, the CityCamp Brighton network.

It’s part of the Brighton Digital Festival, and if you’re a Brighton creative person, technologist, thinker or community representative, who wants to help people outside of our digital bubble use the internet to get more from life, please do sign up.

Below is the excellent boiler plate from Matt Day - someone who’s passionate about getting more people online.

“The UN Human Rights Council says internet access is now a basic human right, but some of the people in our city who would benefit most from being online, are the least likely to be online. Tens of thousands of people in Brighton & Hove are missing out on savings, information, job opportunities and simple human connection.

We can’t call ourselves a digital city until we have digital citizens. Together we can make sure our thriving city harnesses the economic and social benefits of getting everybody online, and gives everyone in the city the opportunities they deserve.

At a special CityCamp event on September 17th, we’re bringing together people from across Brighton & Hove to seize the opportunity of this change and help make the internet truly accessible to everyone in the city. We’ll be creating a network of people that offer innovative solutions to the problem and getting them together with the people that have the skills and the opportunity to make the solutions a reality.
We’ll also be hearing about new proposals to install city-wide wifi, and thinking about how we can use that to support people online.

The event runs from 10 till 6 at the Brighthelm Centre, but you don’t have to be there for the whole day if you can’t make it.”
