Social Media – what do you think it is?

As I state on my profile: “I have a passion for web development. I have a passion for people. It feels great to work with amazing people in the development of Social Media.”
It’s true. But most people still are not fully aware of what Social Media is. The boundaries are not yet defined and I think they will never will: the growth of new technologies is quick.
Good examples of Social Media tools include:
- Wordpress (blogging) – create a voice and a audience
- MySpace – share yourself with the world
- YouTube – share your latest videos. Have your own channel.
- Flickr – share your pictures. Create or join groups about your interests
- Twitter – Micro blogging about “What you are doing”
With them you can:
- Create an audience
- Make yourself heard
- Learn
- Know new points of view
- Share your knowledge
- Get feedback
- Create communities
- Improve your work environment
- Be creative
- …and even change the world

Web Science
Recently a group of academics, scientists, sociologists, entrepreneurs and decision makers from around the world formed the Web Science Research Initiative (WSRI) to explore these and many other issues. They call it “Web Science“.
These people will create the first multidisciplinary research body to examine the World Wide Web and offer the practical solutions needed to help guide its future use and design.
I guess that makes me a “Web Scientist”, since I work in Social Media… does it? I need to buy a pair of glasses with round lenses and thick frame then. ?
WSRI has 4 founding director that include the father on the web Sir Tim Berners-Lee.
I wonder how they are going to classify Social Media.

To me, Social Media includes any medium that creates its value through the interaction between people and sharing it with others. This doesn’t have to be Internet-based, although access to computers and the Internet gives people the ideal way to access, contribute to and share something instantly.
Perhaps the Web itself could be considered a Social Medium.
