Creating solutions to social problems… Social Innovation Camp, London

Following the theme of some of our recent discussions at NM HQ (see what is social media for?) I want to share a link to the Social Innovation Camp (http://www.sicamp.org/) in London 4-6 April.
The camp is sponsored by Yahoo, Nesta and the Young Foundation and aims to bring together designers, developers, people with ideas, mentors and sponsors for a few days in a Barcamp stylee to develop ideas on how to use social media to solve social problems.
It’s great to see the sponsors actively hunting out individuals with ideas and providing a place where there’ll be others who can help them make it happen. And this is definitely not a short term thing - they want people who are up for spending time after the event getting the ideas off the ground.
It sounded a bit daunting, but checking out the current list of ideas has already got my brain ticking, it doesn’t have to be world changing, just tackle a specific issue or need. Go have a look! Ideas deadline is 7 March.

1. This looks WICKED, and I’m really grateful that you found and shared this.
2. How mad that other people are thinking exactly as we are - about how to leverage and employ these wonderful social media tools an skills to actually enact positive change in the world around us? Perhaps not that mad…there’s summink in the air, brothers and sisters
3. Best of all, through a serendipitous path that involves Widgety Goodness, del.icio.us and an email conversation, it turns out I’m chatting to Dan McQuillan, one of the guys behind this Social Innovation Camp project, and we’re due to meet up soon!
Thanks Lou :)

This post inspired me to submit my own idea to Social Innovation Camp.
The ‘Lunch is On Me ‘ concept proposes a Facebook application to create affinity partnerships between major high street retailers (Boots/M&S) and charities (Oxfam/Christian Aid), allowing recipients of a virtual lunch to redeem a coupon in real life which results in a donation to the charity partner.
Check out the full proposal here:

Be sure to leave feedback and ideas for improvement - and fingers crossed that my idea gets accepted!

Oh well, it wasn’t to be - my idea wasn’t accepted. There are some great and achievable concepts on the final list though - and I’ve enjoyed thinking about the whole area.

These un-conference events are a great model for innovation though and I’m looking forward to seeing how it all progresses.
