Many of the folks here at Nikzomk use Twitter. For those not up to speed, it’s basically a micro-blogging platform that works much like your Live Messenger or Facebook “status”. The idea is that you answer the question “what are you doing?” with, well, whatever you’re doing… and all your friends do the same. And you “follow” all your friends… and they “follow” you… and before you know it, you know that 17 minutes ago your mate Frank was in the toilet with George Michael and right now Michelle is watching a re-run of Stars in their Eyes with her cat. Last Friday in 23rd November we received an email from an old colleague – our former Production Director, Phil Herborn. Being of the Antipodean persuasion he left us to return home, via South America – but not until we’d showered him with gifts.
Turns out he’s not just surfing and drinking beer – but putting himself to good use locally. Below is the email he sent:

Here are remaining steps from previous post about publication:
Step 5: Everybody on Version Control System (VCS)
I do not know how many times I have drawn this diagram but it’s been a few! Here’s the best picture I got from it:

Our VCS in Subversion (SVN).
Golden Rule: No FTP access to project files (they must be in SVN to be published).
This illustrates how we work with VCS. All developers commit their code to SVN and update regularly to make sure their code is merged and still works with the latest updates.
Golden Rule: Always update your copy and test before committing your code.
Staging and live servers are a unidirectional working copy from SVN.
Golden Rule: Never commit anything from staging or the live servers

Habbo Hotel is a cartoon-like online virtual world aimed at 12-19 year olds. Originating in Finland, it’s an established player in this market with localised worlds for over 30 countries.
I had an enjoyable visit to Habbo Hotel’s colourful real life European HQ in East London today and I thought I’d share a few things that I learnt. Please do ask questions in the comment section – I’m sure the friendly guys from Habbo Hotel will be pleased to answer. Read more…

My time is all I have. As an occasional sanity check I’ve found it useful to go back through the diary and work out how that time was invested (or splurged…). Read more…

A few months ago, we launched a new website for Rushton International – a market leader in insurance valuations.
At the heart of the new site is a blog. This is best practice for professional service firms who are essentially selling the expertise of their people. It allows you to demonstrate your knowledge and give a human face to the company. Perhaps best of all, blogs are search engine friendly, allowing potential customers to find you using very specific searches. Read more…

I really enjoy computer programming – trying to solve some intricate problem with as few lines of code as possible, making code libraries more efficient, or playing detective to find the causes of obscure bugs.
My only gripe is that computer programming has to be done on computers. I think I would have preferred the days when programming was done with punch cards – not the hours upon hours sitting scrunched and staring at a screen. Even with good posture, a comfy chair, wrist pads, arm rests, a raised screen and frequent breaks, it still stinks.

I was recently handed the monumental task of comparing the major players in the wonderful world of widget platforms. No mean feat, I can assure you, this turned into a mammoth undertaking of epic proportions (well, that may be stretching it a tad ;-). This is new and (relatively) unchartered territory and, although undoubtedly a new and exciting area of social media to be involved in, this meant it was tricky to nail down and collate the huge volumes of data and information into something palatable and useful that would enable us to deliver a whole host of wonderful widgets (be they destined for the web or desktop) using the right platform for the right client, and for the right price. Phew! Read more…
